“AN ALBUM ABOUT THE DECLINE OF DEMOCRACY AND THE LOSS OF UTOPIA.”
After their second album “Get Sick And Let Me Watch You Die” was released in 2024 by the U.S. noise rock/punk label “Reptilian Records” – thereby introducing the band to a wider audience for the first time – the band is taking their release policy a step further by making the record available through a total of nine labels and three distributors across seven countries. This is a DIY collaborative release of the kind the band members know from their anarcho-punk roots. It wasn’t an easy project, but if you love networking, it was a fun one. Build your own fucking life!
The nine songs on “People As Idiots & Idiots As Leaders” largely follow a thematic concept rooted in our times. In a world where wannabe and actual autocrats, far-right extremists and populists, macho loudmouths, and religious fanatics are elected to lead nations, democracy appears increasingly fragile. When the trajectory of social and political development seems to be heading primarily downward, democracy becomes a precious commodity even for anarchists – one that we must hope will at least be maintained at its current level. The conflict between revolutionaries and reformists within the left-wing scene suddenly seems ridiculous. When one is surrounded by figures like Putin, Orbán, Erdoğan, Trump, Bolsonaro, Milei, Meloni, Kaczyński, and the like – and when parties such as the FPÖ and AfD (both far-right/populist) are enjoying enormous success in one’s own and the neighboring country – it becomes disheartening to hold out hope for the future. The media landscape is shifting towards sickening and emotionally radicalizing social media dynamics controlled by ridiculously rich oligarchs who openly express anti-democratic fantasies of omnipotence and would love to play the role of world leaders.
Desolat play a mix of noise rock, sludge, and hardcore, and at heart they’re anarcho-punks – you can’t let those things go uncommented.
The album’s chronology follows an initial assessment (Idiots as Leaders, Pig Race To The Apocalypse), followed by depression (This Sadness Makes Me Rage, No Depression When Dead, Good People Keep Their Mouths Shut While The Assholes Believe The World Belongs To Them) and ultimately culminates in cynicism and resignation (Cyberdyne Employment Application, Humans Are Such Easy Prey). Doesn’t sound very uplifting. Yet anger at the state of the world and one’s own condition is omnipresent in the energy of the music and lyrics.
Stylistically, emocore elements have crept in for the first time, revisiting the band members’ past projects. Life’s a Circle.
The album features guest appearances by JARBOE (SWANS, NEUROSIS), Michael Masen (MOZO MOZO), and RBK von ROLLTREPPE.
The album was once again recorded and mixed at Cosmix Studio in Vienna by Rainer Spänle, and mastered by Swedish death metal legend Dan Swanö / UNISOUND (EDGE OF SANITY, KATATONIA, BLOODBATH).

Nachdem das 2. Album „Get Sick And Let Me Watch You Die” 2024 vom us-amerikanischen Noise Rock/Punk Label „Reptilian Records“ veröffentlicht und die Band somit erstmal einem breiteren Publikum vorgestellt wurde, wird die Releasepolicy ein Stück weitergetrieben und die Platte von insgesamt neun Labels und drei Vertrieben aus sieben Ländern zugänglich gemacht. Ein DIY Kollaborationsrelease wie es die Bandmitglieder aus ihrer Anarcho Punk Sozialisation kennen. Das war kein einfaches Projekt, aber wenn man Networking liebt ein vergnügliches. Build your own fucking life!
Die neun Songs auf „People As Idiots & Idiots As Leaders“ folgen zum Großteil einem inhaltlichen, unserer Zeit geschuldeten Konzept. In einer Welt in der Möchtegern- und tatsächliche Autokraten, Rechtsradikale und Populisten, machoide Großmäuler und religiöse Fanatiker zu Staatenlenkern gewählt werden, erscheint die Demokratie zunehmend fragil. Wenn der Lauf der gesellschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklung primär nach unten zu gehen scheint, wird auch für Anarchist:innen die Demokratie zu einem hohen Gut, von dem man hoffen muss, dass zumindest das gegenwärtige Niveau halbwegs erhalten bleibt. Lächerlich erscheint plötzlich der Widerstreit zwischen Revolutionär- und Reformorientierten in der linken Szene. Wenn man von Putin, Orbán, Erdoğan, Trump, Bolsonaro, Milei, Meloni, Kaczyński und derlei Figuren umgeben ist und im eigenen sowie im Nachbarland Parteien wie die FPÖ und AfD (beide rechtsradikal/populistisch) enorm reüssieren wird es unangenehm in Bezug auf die Hoffnung für die Zukunft. Die Medienwelt verschiebt sich zugunsten von krank machenden und emotional radikalisierenden Social-Media-Dynamiken, die von unwirklich reichen Oligarchen gesteuert werden, die unverhohlen antidemokratische Allmachtsfantasien formulieren und gerne Weltenlenker spielen möchten.
Desolat spielen einen Sound aus Noise Rock, Sludge und Hardcore und sind im Herzen Anarcho Punks, sowas kann man nicht unkommentiert lassen.
Die Chronologie des Albums folgt einer ersten Bestandsaufnahme (Idiots as Leaders, Pig Race To The Apocalypse), der darauffolgenden Depression (This Sadness Makes Me Rage, No Depression When Dead, Good People Keep Their Mouths Shut While The Assholes Believe The World Belongs To Them) und mündet schlussendlich in Zynismus und Resignation (Cyberdyne Employment Application, Humans Are Such Easy Prey). Klingt nicht sehr erbaulich. Wut über die Zustände und den eigenen Zustand ist in der Energie der Musik und Texte jedoch omnipräsent.
Stilistisch haben sich erstmals Emocore-Elemente eingeschlichen und greifen damit vergangene Projekte der Bandmitglieder wieder auf. Life’s a Circle.
