Punx not Dead !!!!!!!!!!!
Montreal - The leader of a punk rock group whose fans
rioted Tuesday night after its concert was cancelled blamed Immigration Canada
yesterday for the destruction, saying authorities had no business checking
band members for criminal records.
Hours before they were supposed to take the stage at a Montreal nightclub,
members of Total Chaos and The Exploited were denied entry at the Canadian
border crossing in Lacolle, Que. Robert Gervais, an Immigration Canada spokesman,
said they were refused because three members had records for "serious
criminality" and four others provided false information to Immigration
officers.
Rob Chaos, lead singer and a founding member of the 13-year-old California
band Total Chaos, said he suspects the bands were targeted because of their
appearance. "We have blue hair and Mohawks and stuff," he said by
cellular phone as his band travelled to its next show in Cleveland.
"I'm totally pissed off about it," Mr. Chaos said. "I told
the [Immigration officer] there were a whole lot of kids coming to see us.
Canadian government Immigration is, in my opinion, responsible for the riots."
The singer called the Canadian border the strictest in the world and said
his drummer felt discriminated against when Immigration Canada dug up his
15-year-old criminal record. Mr. Chaos said the offence was "kind of
major," but noted it was committed when the drummer was 18.
"I don't think a country should have the right to pry into people's pasts.
There should be a law against that," he said. He noted that the singer
of British band The Exploited has "tons of things he's done," but
he never has trouble entering the United States.
He stopped short of condemning the fans who met news of the concert's cancellation
by overturning cars, setting them on fire, shattering windows and looting
stores. Police reported that 42 vehicles were damaged, including eight that
were set on fire. Rioters vandalized eight stores.
"I don't know why the kids went crazy.... I personally wouldn't have
done it. I don't believe in that stuff," he said, before adding that
riots can be agents of change. "People riot to make changes for some
reason, and they do somewhat work."
For The Exploited, the headline act whom Mr. Chaos described as living legends,
it was a disappointing end to their first North American tour in 10 years.
A show scheduled for Toronto last night was also cancelled, and now The Exploited
are flying back to Britain.
Promoting their new album, F--- the System, the 20-year-old Scottish band
were trying to ride a wave of renewed interest in punk music in North America.
With such anti-authoritarian songs as I Believe in Anarchy and Class War,
they developed a cult following in the 1980s that became known as the Barmy
Army. Lately, however, their popularity has faded and the current tour was
a tough sell in several cities. News of the Montreal riot surprised a Pittsburgh
concert promoter who, because of poor ticket sales, cancelled a show by the
two bands that had been scheduled there last Friday.
Jon Rinaldo of Joker Productions described The Exploited as has-beens who
only managed to sell 20 tickets for a 1,000-place Pittsburgh venue before
he pulled the plug. "It's actually shocking," Mr. Rinaldo said of
Tuesday's rampage. "I didn't think anyone would get that upset that they
weren't playing."
The Exploited had a reputation for provoking fan riots and destroying hotel
rooms in their early days. A band biography on their record label's Web site
describes them as "riot starting, bouncer bashing, hotel trashing, foul
talking, noise causing, venue wrecking, government hating, rule breaking,
piss taking, unrelenting, punk rocking."
Hey,
Thanks for opening this email, some of you may know me, some of you way not,
but as they say a stranger is just a loser you haven't met yet! Nah only jokin
but i guess i should explain a bit about what 'Spudmonkey's Zine Trade' is
all about. Basically i am emailing several different zines, online punk/hc
resources, internet radio broadcasts, labels, promoters, bands and anyone
i think may be interested hoping to get a bit of help and general interest
in the zine trade. I started this resource two months ago and already have
nearly twenty zines from six different countries on the website.
The idea behind the website was to encourage the worldwide trading of zines
whether they are music, personal, political etc. Trading zines is a great
way for those of us obsessed with the world of zinery to meet others worldwide
who feel the same, so we can spend hours talking about layouts and stuff that
bores the average joe.
There was one thing i wnated to ensure in regards to the zine trade and that
was it would be for reliable trader's only, there is nothing worse than waiting
patiently for a trade to arrive that never comes. I wanted to ensure that
if someone on the zine trade was not responding i could be contacted and email
them as to why.
There are only a few guidelines, i will not accept zines that are homophobic,
sexist, racist or dodgy in anyway, i have no time for that sort of bullshit
and if that seems harsh well then set a trading network up yourself. Also
it is a must that you contact the zine writer before sending on your trade,
this way hopefully less confusion will arise.
Also i do my own zine called Lucidity, its 44 a5 pages, cut n paste full of
rants adn ramblings, 1 uro a copy, email me for bulk prices and postage costs.
Anyhoo i wont keep you much longer. i just wnated to say if you feel you can
help in anyway, even if you are willing to distribute flyers at gigs, pass
the message on, or if you have any ideas or opinions etc it would help loads.
Thanks for reading this email, web address, email and postal addy are written
below. Thanks again.
